Built to Lead: Communication, Credibility, and the Shift from "Doing" to "Leading"

Technical craft skills may earn you the opportunity to lead. Communication, judgment, and the ability to develop others determine whether you succeed once you get there.

During the first half of the session, participants will explore the practical communication skills construction leaders use every day, including professional email (and even text!) communication, conversations with supervisors and owners, coordination with trade partners, and adapting communication for different audiences. Participants will also identify skills they can begin building now to prepare for their next role.

The second half will focus on the transition from doing the work to leading the work. Participants will examine why strong technical performers often struggle to delegate, practice deciding when to "do, delegate, coach, or escalate", and work through real-world construction leadership scenarios.

The session will include paired discussion, small-group exercises, live scenario work, participant-submitted leadership challenges, and a practical handout attendees can use after the training. 

By the end of the session, attendees should better understand how to:

• Communicate professionally across different audiences
• Adjust their communication based on the person and situation
• Build credibility before and after a promotion
• Shift from solving every problem themselves to leading others through the work
• Delegate clearly without abandoning accountability
• Apply the concepts to real construction leadership challenges
